A Brief history of the game of golf:
The History of Golf began on the east coast of Scotland in the early 14th century, where fishermen used pieces of driftwood to hit pebbles along the landscape as they returned from their fishing boats. The game proved so popular that it was banned by King James II in 1457. Despite the ban, the game spread throughout Scotland, and was eventually exported to the rest of the world. The first written rules of golf were formulated in 1744. In 1897 the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews compiled a uniform code of rules that is still applied today. The game boomed in Britain in the late 19th Century, as the number of courses increased from 60 in 1880 to 2,330 in 1900. The game was introduced to the United States in 1888, but by 1900, there were more than 1,000 clubs there. The game also spread to Asia through the influence of the British Empire. Golf clubs were established in India, Ceylon, Singapore and Burma. In Malaysia, the first golf course was established in Taiping in the 1880s. The growth of golf has continued into the 20th Century. Top professionals like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros have helped to popularize the game throughout the world. In the 1990's, golf has undergone a new wave of popularity with more and more people hitting the golf course and trying to emulate new golfing heroes like Tiger Woods, David Duval, Ernie Els and Greg Norman. |
