Wisconsin Breweries History: Joseph Huber Brewery
The Joseph Huber Brewery started in 1845 3 years before the
Wisconsin Territory became a state. The brewery changed hands several times as
it grew in size and capacity, but it always stuck to the tried and true Old
World recipes and brewing techniques. When Bavarian immigrant Joseph Huber
arrived in Monroe in 1923, he began work at this brewery which was called
The Blumer Brewery.
During Prohibition the Huber Brewery produced a popular "near-beer"
called Golden Glow. By 1940, Joe Huber had helped to save the brewery from
bankruptcy by organizing an employee stock buyout. He was known for honesty,
character, and dedication to brewing only the finest beers.
It was no surprise to anyone when in 1947 Blumer Brewery stockholders
voted unanimously to change the name of the brewery to the Joseph Huber Brewing
Company. The Huber brewery is the oldest continually operating brewery in the
Midwest and the second oldest in the nation.
