Texas Breweries History: Pearl Brewing Company
The Pearl Brewing Company in San Antonio started in 1881
as the J. B. Behloradsky Brewery (1881-83). The brewery was renamed
the San Antonio Brewing Company (1883-88) and began producing
Pearl Beer in 1886. The name was changed to the San Antonio Brewing
Association and then in 1952 it was changed to the Pearl Brewing
Company.
Pearl acquired the Goetz Brewing Company of St. Louis
in 1961 and merged with the Southdown Corporation of Houston in 1970.
The acquisitions allowed Pearl to move into national markets.
In 1995 S&P Company of Mill Valley, California, purchased
Pearl. They made Pearl, Pearl Light, Jax, Falstaff, and 900 Malt Liquor.
In 1998, Pearl Brewing purchased the Stroh Brewing Company, who had
recently acquired the Lone Star Brand. To much hoopla, Pearl brought the
Lone Star brand home to Texas.
In June 2001, S&P Company closed the Pearl Plant in Texas and Pabst
brewing took over the Pearl brands. Production of Lone Star and Pearl beers,
along with other Pabst brands was moved to the Miller Brewing Company in
Fort Worth where Miller is brewing 80% of Pabst beers.
