Pennsylvania Breweries History: Bartels Brewing Company At the turn of the century, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area was home to about 20 small breweries. Corner taverns dispensed brands like Bartels Brewing Company's $5,000 Pure Beer, Glennon's Old Mule Ale, Anthracite Brown Stout and Keystone Porter to thirsty coal miners trudging home from their shifts. The Bartels Brewing Company is now closed but some of the Bartels brands are now brewed and bottled By The Lion, Inc., Wilkes-Barre, PA.
