Oregon Breweries History: Widmer Brothers Brewing Company
Brothers Kurt and Rob Widmer founded Widmer Brothers Brewing Company in 1984.
Widmer Brothers Brewing Company brews unique and authentic European and American
style beers. After living in Germany and enjoying fine European beers in the 1970s,
Kurt Widmer returned to Portland, Oregon, with a mission to create American
interpretations of authentic European beer styles. His search for an original
beer experience led Kurt back to a brewery in Düsseldorf, where he studied recipes
of that famous brewing center. The Widmer Brothers' special brewing yeast was
obtained from the world-renowned Brewing Research Institute in Weihenstephan, Bavaria.
This special yeast has been maintained at Widmer's brewery.
Widmer Brothers Brewing Company's brews include America's Original Hefeweizen,
Pale Ale, Sweet Betty Blonde Ale, Widberry and Altbier. Seasons and holidays inspired
Widmer Brothers to be the first brewery to introduce seasonal beers to America
(Sommerbräu and Oktoberfest).
