Ohio Breweries History: Carling Brewing Company - Carling National Breweries

Carling started in Canada. The American rights for Carling were sold to the Cleveland and Sandusky Brewing Company, which continue to sell and brew Carling products until 1911.

In 1934 with prohibition ending in the USA, the former car manufacturer James A Bohannon opened the Brewing Corporation of America in Cleveland on Quincy Avenue and licenses the technology to brew beer from Carling in Canada. In 1944 Brewing Corporation of America purchase the Forest City Brewing Company plant on Davenport Avenue in Cleveland as well as the Tip Top Brewing Co. In 1953 the company was renamed to "The Carling Brewing Company".
In 1954 Carling Brewing purchased the Griesedieck-Western Brewing in Belleville, IL, which also includes the former Hyde Park Brewery in St. Louis and in 1956 purchased the Frankenmuth Brewing Company plant in Frankenmuth, MI.

From 1956 to 1971 carlings share of the US market fell from #4 to out of the top 10. During this decline the original Cleveland plant was sold to C. Schmidt & Sons of Philadelphia. In 1976 Carling merged with National Brewing of Baltimore creating Carling National Breweries.

In 1979 Carling-National was sold to G Heileman Brewing Company of La Crosse, WI. Heileman continueed to operate the Carling breweries in Belleville, IL , Frankenmuth, MI, Baltimore, MD and Phoenix, AZ. One by one the various breweries were closed and Heileman was sold to Strohs. In 2001 the Carling Brands were purchased by Coors of Golden, CO.
