New Hampshire Breweries History: Smuttynose Brewing Company
The Smuttynose Brewing Company was founded in 1994 by the people
who started the Northampton and Portsmouth Breweries and is located in the
historic seacoast city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Portsmouth is an
historic seaport town located along that coastline. Smuttynose Brewing
brews include Shoals Pale Ale, Old Brown Dog, Portsmouth Lager, Robust
Porter, Weizenheimer and The Big Beer Series. Smuttynose brews are
distributed throughout New England, as well as in other selected markets
along the eastern seaboard and the midwest.
Smuttynose Brewing is affiliated with two pioneering brewpubs
in New England: the Northampton Brewery in Northampton, Massachusetts, and
the Portsmouth Brewery located in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
The Northampton Brewery, founded in 1987, was the second brewpub to open
in New England (after Boston's Commonwealth). The Portsmouth Brewery
is the Granite State's original brewpub was founded in 1991. It is located
on Market Street in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth.
