Maine Breweries History: Shipyard Brewing Company
In 1992, the Federal Jack's Brew Pub was started by Fred Forsley, a real estate consultant and Alan Pugsley who was schooled and trained in the art of English ale brewing by the legendary master of the craft, Peter Austin. The Pub was located in the historic 19th century shipyards in Kennebunk, Maine. The Shipyard ales was founded and named for one of the most famous ships to be built on this site on the Kennebunk River. The Shipyard family of ales outstripped supply and the facility at Kennebunk was tapped out. So,in 1994, four acres on Portland's historic working waterfront became the location for The Shipyard's second facility, founded on the site where American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807. Then in October 1996, The Shipyard Brewing Company announced plans to open the world's first airport microbrewery in the Orlando International Airport. In addition to the microbrewery, which opened April 2, 1997, Host Marriott Services Corporation operates a Shipyard Brew Pub Restaurant, adjacent to the brewery. A second Host Marriott Services-operated Shipyard Brew Pub opened in the Airport in July. |
