Illinois Breweries History: Atlantic Brewing Company
The Atlantic Brewing Company at one time produced the Red Top Brewery
brands (Red Top Ale, Red Top Beer, Barbarossa, 20 Grand Ale, Wunderbrau)
after the Red Top brewery was closed in 1957. The Terra Haute Brewing Company
first picked them up and then they were sold to the Atlantic brewing.
The Terre Haute Brewing Company was once the seventh largest brewery in
the United States, producing primarily lager beers with Champagne Velvet it's
main brew. It was one of the few breweries to
survive prohibition and grow to one of the top national brands. In 1958,
at THBCo's peak, production was 1.5 million BBLs (about 46.5 million gallons)
and employed 950. Later the THBCo was purchased by Atlantic Brewing Company, who
closed the Terre Haute location.
