Florida Breweries History: Miami Brewing

The Miami Brewing Company was set up by Rick Durkin in the late 1990s when they started brewing from both bottles and draft beer their site in a warehouse at 9292 NW 110st. Like so many American micro-brewery concerns, the Miami Brewing Company uses an experienced brewmaster (Andrew Rathman of the Sarasota Brewing Co) and developed markets in Florida, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois. At the height of production they produced three labels (all named Hurricane Reef): lager, Amber Ale and Golden Ale. They also featured an active visitors welcome centre and brewery tour.

Hurricane Reef is delivered in a quite wide necked, dark brown glass bottle and is closed with a silver crown cap bearing its name. There is a large three quarter wrap-around label (the predominant colours are orange and blue) which merely declares the name Hurricane Reef lager. In the centre is a picture of a sea plane (perhaps one of Chalk’s planes which ply the trade out to the Bahamas) coming into land against a back drop of a windswept palm tree and a glorious sun set. The left hand side notes the “best before” date. The right side carries the usual Government Health Warning.

The Miami Brewing Company was taken over by the Florida Brewing Company in 2003.
