Canadian Breweries History: Molson Breweries
Canada's pre-eminent brewer, Molson was founded in 1786 by John Molson, who opened
his first brewery on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Montreal. Now with 3,800
employees and five breweries across the country, Molson is one of Canada's oldest
consumer brand names and North America's oldest beer brand.
In 2001, Molson repurchased 100% of the Molson brands in the United States
and has a 50.1% interest in Molson USA, which markets the Molson brands in the United
States. The Corporation is rebuilding the Molson brands in the largest and one of the
fastest growing import markets in the world. Molson also is pursuing international
growth in Brazil, one of the world's fastest growing beer markets. Molson's
acquisition of the Kaiser brand in 2002, combined with its previous purchase of
Bavaria in 2000, firmly positions it as the second largest brewer in Brazil and
the 13th largest in the world.
