Mexican Breweries History: Cerveceria Modelo

Corona In Mexico many small breweries existed during the 1920's, especially in the North of the country. Many of them had a local and regional presence, with the capacity to supply the market's demand. It was on October 1925 when Braulio Iriarte, together with the Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles, inaugurated Cervecería Modelo, S.A., best known for its brand Corona.

The Company expanded through the acquisition of breweries to become Grupo Modelo which produces Corona Light, Corona Extra, Negra Modelo, Modelo Especial, Estrella and Pacifico, and accounts for over 80% of Mexican beer exports. The acquired companies, such as Cervecería de Toluca y México, S.A. (1935), producer of the brand Victoria, Cervecería Estrella (1954), Cervecería del Pacífico (1954), producer of the brand Pacífico, Cervecería Modelo del Noroeste (1960) and Cervecería Modelo de Torreón (1966), were located in strategic areas of the country.

As of 2003 Grupo Modelo has eight brewing plants in the country of Mexico and exports five brands with presence in more than 150 countries and is the exclusive importer of Anheuser-Busch's products in Mexico, including the brands Budweiser and Bud Light. Grupo Modelo trades in the Mexican Stock Exchange since 1994 with the ticker symbol GMODELOC.
