European Breweries History: Lowenbrau
Löwenbräu beer was born in 1383 at the Lion's Inn: "Zum Löwen".
In 1516 the Bavarian Purity Law was established in germany. Löwenbräu still
adheres to the Purity Law today by using only the finest quality malt, hops,
yeast, and brewing water, and nothing else. In 1818 George Brey, a farmer's
son from Aidling, buys "Zum Löwen" and begins to develop the Löwenbräu business.
Lowenbrau moved to Munich in 1851 and buildt a state of the art brewery. The
The Löwenbräu brewery is almost completely destroyed during World War II
and was rebuilt with the latest technologies. Löwenbräu started exporting to
England and the US in 1974 and in 1977 Löwenbräu became the
leading import in the United states.
To maintain their success in an increasingly global market, two traditional Munich breweries agree to merge in 1997: Löwenbräu and Spaten. |
