German Breweries History: Brauerei Beck & Co

Brauerei Beck & Co Brauerei Beck & Co June 27, 1873 Luder Rutenberg, Heinrich Beck and Thomas May - a builder, master brewer and businessman - joined to establish the Kaiserbrauerei known as Beck & May in Bremen, Germany. Nestled along the river Weser in the northwest corner of Germany, Bremen has a rich legacy of brewing beer. In fact, it was the early Bremen brewers, inspired in their search for a beer that could withstand long sea journeys, who created a recipe for a heavy barley beer nearly 1,000 years ago.
,br>The very first Beck's was brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, which requires beer to be made only from barley malt, hops and water. We know today that this recipe also includes yeast, but its existence wasn't known until the invention of the microscope.

Even from the beginning, Beck's founders sought international markets, and for good reason. Heinrich Beck was a master at the art of brewing light bottom-fermented beer. Quite simply, this process allowed beer to travel long distances without suffering a loss in quality, something that characterized other exported beers at that time.
