Canadian Breweries History: Moosehead Breweries
Since its founding in 1867 by the Oland family the Moosehead Breweries have survied fire,
takeover bids, prohibition, the Depression, two world wars and absolute destruction in
an explosion. The same Olnad family (six generations later) still operaters the brewery.
The Moosehead saga began in 1867, when Susannah Oland first brewed a solitary batch of brown October ale in her backyard in Nova Scotia. Encouraged by the welcome reception her beer received from friends and family members, Susannah and her husband, John James Dunn Oland, began to market the beer and the Oland family brewery was named the "Army & Navy Brewery," and thrived for several years. When John Oland was killed in a riding accident, Susannah renamed the brewery to "S. Oland Sons & Co.". Moosehead Breweries has occupied its current building in Saint John, New Brunswick, since it bought Ready's Brewery in 1928. This building was coincidentally built in 1867, the same year Susannah Oland began brewing beer. Moosehead Breweries brews, packages and kegs all of its products from this building, that also serves as the head office for administrative staff and production. Moosehead is imported into the United States by The Gambrinus Company of San Antonio. |
