Moosehead Breweries - Canada |
| Canada Breweries History:
If Jacques Cartier and the lads wintering over at Stadacona (Quebec City) in 1535-36, had not been shown how to brew spruce beer by the Natives, they likely would all have died of scurvy. The Jesuit Fathers also enjoyed their pint. In 1646, Brother Ambroise made some homebrew and a year later the Jesuits built a brewery near Quebec. In 1671, Jean Talon got into the act and opened Canada’s first commercial brewery. In Upper Canada, beer followed the Loyalists and the British Army. Sometime before 1793, the Loyalist Finkle brothers, followed Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe’s wishes and started Canadas first brewpub, just west of Kingston. According to Governor Simcoe, a brewery would “be a most desirable circumstance” and would improve “morals” by reducing “the intemperate use of rum.” In 1800, the War Office in London canceled the daily ration of beer and replaced it with "beer money," a penny a day, enough to buy five pints. With this regulation the Canadian brewing industry was born. John Molson, born in 1763, immigrated to Canada in 1782 and bought a small brewery. Molson developed this small operation into a major Canadian brewery, which led to his tremendous fame and wealth. Using the profits from his brewery Molson funded Canada’s first railway, the Chaplain and St. Lawrence Railroad which was the first step in building a united country. Molson also used the profits from his beer to build the first successful steamship made entirely in Canada. Molson went on to build a fleet of 22 ships. One of these ships became the first steamship used in conduct of war. Today the Canadian brewery industry is a large industry of 24 conventional breweries and 54 microbreweries. However, in the 1800s there were nearly 200 small breweries that were an integral part of their local communities. Interestingly, there has been a resurgence of microbreweries in the last decade. The beer industry currently employs about 16 790 people who work directly for beer companies, and an estimated 130 000 people work in jobs that depend on the beer industry. While this is only about 1.3% of Canada’s active labor force, it feeds a thirsty country that annually consumer about 90 liters of beer per person over 19 years old. |
