Washington Breweries History: Blitz Henry Brewing -
Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve
Henry Weinhard has been brewing beer since 1856. The Henry Weinhard
brewery was family owned until 1979 and durning this time Henry's also contact
brewed for the Buffalo Brewing Company of Sacramento and Acme of Oakland
California. During the last 20 years of the 1900's a series
of ownership flips and consolidations occurred: the brewery was first sold to
Pabst Brewing Company and then to G. Heileman, then became a Stroh product
and finally became a brand of the Miller Brewing Company (a unit of the Philip
Morris Companies).
The historic Weinhard's Brewery building in Portland has been saved
and refurbished along with the old Armory building. The rest of site has
been redeveloped. Henry's brands are now brewed at the old Olympia plant, now owned by
Miller in Tumwater Washington. Weinhard's contract brews lager and ale beers for the
Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams).
Henry Weinhard's beers: Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve lager,
Blue Boar Irish Style Ale, Blue Boar Red Lager, Hazelnut Stout, Henrys Hard Lemonade.
Henry Weinhard (was a real person) produced root beer and vanilla cream
soda during America's Prohibition in order to keep the brewery's doors open. These
soft drinks are still manufactured today.
