Pennsylvania Breweries History: Latrobe Brewery (Rolling Rock)

The Rolling Rock green bottle: The reason behind the green bottle is more economic than ergonomic. During the Second World War, recycling became every American's patriotic duty. In order to conserve glass for the war effort, every pain was taken not to waste it. So when tavern owners would seperate the multitudes of brown bottles to be sent back to each brewery, it became a little confusing. A green bottle, though, was easily spotted and sent straight to Latrobe.

Latrobe Brewing is owned by Labatt, which in turn is owned by Interbrew, the Belgian giant. The Latrobe brewery we know today started post-Prohibition. Prior to Prohibition, it had been started as an expansion brewery by Pittsburgh Brewing to handle the local market. They decided to consolidate after Repeal, and the five Tito brothers bought the Latrobe brewery. In 1939, they brewed a new, light-colored, light-bodied beer that they thought was sublimely refreshing, named it Rolling Rock, and founded the success of their brewery upon it.

Latrobe Brewing produces the following brews: Latrobe Bohemian Pilsner, Loyalhanna Pennsylvania Lager Lager, Rock Green Light Lager, Rolling Rock Black Lager, Rolling Rock Bock Bock, Rolling Rock Extra Pale, and Rolling Rock Light.
