European Breweries History: Pilsner Urquell
The Pilsner Urquell Brewery is located in Pilsner, an
hour's drive from Prague in the Czech Republic. Pilsner Urquell was obtained
in 1999 by the corporation SAB which was the third largest brewer in the world. SAB
has now combined with the Miller brewing company to form SABMiller which is the
second largest brewered in the world as of 2003.
Before 1842 beers were dark and cloudy. In that year, Pilsner Urquell
brewed the world's first golden light beer and the Pilsner beer was born.
In its purest sense, the term Pilsner describes an especially hoppy,
golden beer brewed in the town Pilsner. Pilsner Urquell literally translated
means "Pilsner from the original source".
